“I want to make games easy to play. I want to make different kinds of games, for adults as well as children. Mario was of course primarily aimed at childen but I think the understanding of a game is the same for a child, a specialist in videogames, an old person or even a person who has never played a videogame. A game must appeal to all these types of people, and that’s ultimately the kind of game I want to do.”

Digital INTERACTIVE Entertainment

“I plotted button clicks per hour as a measure of interactivity. The highest activity is 10 per second (that’s a high-paced videogame) and at the other end of the scale is one every hour and a half (that’s the play button on the VCR).”

The Producer

“I think a producer has to be removed enough so as not to influence the team too much – the less the producer gets involved, the better the product is.

A successful startup

“I don’t think entrepreneurship can ever be stopped. But at the same time, there is, as sure as I’m sitting here, a startup in a garage somewhere that will be significantly more successful than anything that is out there. I have no idea who it is, but it’s out there.”

What “she’s” really want

“No-one has really figured out what theshe‘s” really want. And theshe‘s” represent a very interesting opportunity for all of us. I have three doughters, one ten and two older, and none have been that interested in games. Whereas all my sons are.”

“Focus” testing

“We try and get as many people as possible to look at the game and respond to it. When you’ve been looking at it for a year you assume so many things. It’s very important that it makes sense the first time you play it. I try and watch the playtesters the first time they play the game.”

Ports and conversions.

On the one hand people could argue that if you were being professional you would allow for the various conversions when you design the game, but another person could argue that it‘s more important to make it perfect for one machine. But you can’t win, and the problem happens because there is more than one machine.”

The emphasis has to be on gameplay.

We used to just disappear up out own arse for technology, now we actually firmly believe that gameplay is more important. Although we do have good technology, the emphasis has to be on gameplay and that‘s the way that we sell many more games.”
